Wild Weekend @ Inverloch – Melbourne Cup weekend 2007
For the past 11 years we have gone away to Wilsons Prom with the Pepper clan for the Melbourne Cup long weekend. This year was different as unfortunately the sites booked out really early so we were unable to get to the Prom this year. So it was decided that we would head down to Inverloch for our camping weekend. This year was always going to be new and exciting as we were heading to a new place, and some friends and family of Mel & Steve’s were coming camping as well. All together there were 25 people !! We headed to Inverloch on Friday and all set up camp. The rain stayed away on Friday and we all had Fish and Chips for dinner. The younger kids went to bed and all the older kids and adults stayed up enjoying each others company. Saturday started great, during the day the drizzle came and went. The kids had fun riding their bikes and the mum’s went out and did some shopping, the dad’s started drinking their beers !!! The weather started to get colder and the rain was becoming more consistant and by the time the kids were in bed the rain had set in. It rained…and rained and the wind started to pick up. We all headed off to bed later on Saturday night. During the middle of the night, the noise of the wind getting stronger and stronger woke me up…then all of a sudden, I heard a loud crack. Within seconds I heard Mel & Steve yelling out.. We ran out and found that a large gum tree had been blown over and went on top of Mel and Steve’s tent. Mel and Steve have two young boys who were sleeping right next to them. Amazingly, one of the branches fell right in between the boys, not touching them at all. Steve was able to get the boys out and all were ok… Our tent was right next to Mel and Steve’s, a smaller tree had also fallen but the trailer which was behind our tent ad stopped it from falling on our tent. We all decided that we would not sleep in our tent and Tash, Jamie and I slept in our car. Mel, Steve and the boys slept in Ross and Debbie’s caravan, and the girls slept in the back of Mel’s car. After only getting about 1-2 hours of sleep we awoke to assess the damage and take more photos. We all made the decision to come home, Mel and Steve’s tent had been torn apart and we are all so thankful that no one was hurt considering how big the tree was. Here are some photos of the tree and of Mel & Steves tent. We all enjoyed coming home and sleeping in our warm beds….
